MMO's, does the world need another? - March 17th, 2007

There are currently over 60 MMO's being developed, and that is a oversaturation, by my standards. A lot of MMO's, especially Korean MMO's are the same and just keeps repeating themselves. To me it is all about quality and uniqueness, most of the upcoming MMO's are going to be complete failures, and I can reassure you 100% to that. Because developers think they are a easy money maker. But don't understand what it really takes to make a money maker MMO. SOE lost there way from quality MMO's, to now a bottom line MMO company. Which will lead how long till Blizzard follows the same path, we will see with there next upcoming MMO they have set to make.

One good example of a quality MMO that went from good to money maker and then failed miserabley, is Star Wars Galaxies.

So what do you all think, we really needs 60 more MMO's, or just maybe like 5 extremely well thought out MMO's.

Well, it's a business and everyone wants a piece of the pie. But there is just so many pieces.

We will have to wait and see I guess.

The problem that you have is that they dont care about quality play style. A MMO is a money maker that has such a quick return on investment. Look what does Blizzard have 2+ million subscribers? in both us and euro. Lets look at best 9.95 a month so they make 18 million a month. YOu know that the majority of there support staff is players? Even GM's. Volunteered not paid. Take a game like even online that I enjoy currently that has on average 20,000 players on at any given time. at 9.95 a month now there are ways to get ingame time and But I am sure they are making hundreds of thousands if not millions a year on the game.

But you know what they have once they have you try the game, opprotunity for expansion. How many expansions do you think WOW will have? and at $50.00 a pop. and lets not talk about the peeps Like myself that have multiple accounts in multiple MMOs. Shoot I understand its about grinding for certain gear that will only be outdated and underpowered with in a few patches.

Have you seen the MMO by Funcom Age of Conan they took a name made some barbarians and crappy graphics but when it actually releases they are expecting such a huge fan turn out because of a freaking name. I mean how many star wars geeks signed up for freaking swg. And dont even get me started on Final fantasy and Lord of the rings. Barf.

In all what are you gonna do. It is a worse addiction then crack cocaine. They now have 13 step programs for people with these addctions. It is also on the verge of being classified as a desease. It leads to high blood pressure, stress, divorce, obiesty, and many many other things I mean just watch the angry german kid youtube video.

Problem is that until they make Pot legal I will feed my addictions this way.

Don't think your totaly correct here. Funcom maybe isn't the richest company online but i can ashure you there MMORPG's rock. I played AO ( anarchy online ) for almost 3 years. And if you can show me even ONE mmorpg that is even close to the complexity and fun to play you gonna get 100€ from me. AO is both complex and easy to handle. The game play is fun and it used to have a good community. When i start to play a game it needs to be fun from start to end. If i don't enjoy a game anymore i quit. And it took me 3 years to achieve everything in AO. The expansion where a nice addon and won several prices.

Now that said lets say something about age of conan.

I played Age of conan in beta and i can tell you this much. The next MMORPG i wil buy wil be AOC. It is the same style of game play like AO. Both complex and easy to handle. Nice features and so on. They got some nice extra's that other game devs didn't even think about. Maybe the graphs arn't that great but stil they are better than several other games on the market as i type.

Last but not least graphs isn't what a game makes good. You could put all the best graph artist at one table and let them develope a game but if the scripters suck and the story line people suck the game wil suck. But put the best scripters at one table and let them develope a game and put some sucky designers next to it. The game wil stil be averange to good. Because people play a game because it is fun to play not because it looks good. " SIMPEL LOGIC HE ? "

MMORPG's are over rated in most times. Look at some of the games that people call good and i break it down.

WoW : nice to play but why pay ? Alot of the features in WoW has been stolen from other games. WHY o WHY fantasy style ? Be original blizzard

EVE : What is fun about flying a spacecraft threw hours and hours of nothing ?

MU : Is this even a game made by developer or a kid ?

Lineage : JABFMMO ( just another boring fantasy mmo )

....

I found AO's UI to be horrible to use, thats what turned me off the game. What we need right now is for the more established game developers to try a mmo. Forget all of these upstart korean mmo's, they never last longer than a year, forget SOE, because we all know that Sony can't make games(which is 95% of the good playstation games are 3rd party).

Blizzard is an established rpg gaming power house, and its fairly obvious when playing wow that the majority of their ideas have evolved from diablo 2.

We need devolopers like Rockstar and Bungie, and others that are known for quality games to make a new mmo. When classic series' like LoTR and Star Wars are liscenced for mmo use they need to be created by companies as epic as they are, not from a failure-at-life company like Turbine or SOE.

Yes the world needs another MMO, but it needs to be well made.

<goes back to waiting for Diablo 3>

How does blizzard got so much peoples? a good publicity, a good start to addict the peoples and warcraft 3. The lore was also good till they scrap it with the x-pack. Now that they have no competitor, they are siting on their chair and doing all to make all the profits they can without thinking about the customer. Personnaly im waiting on Warhammer Online.

ehhh, wow get's old fast....

And I'm not always in the mood for a super emersive 3d world... Sometimes I want some simple 2d graphics... Sometimes I just want a game I can get into quick, and "be somebody" with little effort, just to fill a week or month or two....

Not every body has hours upon hours to play... There are ton's of differn't people, with ton's of differnt preferences....
