Question Q about DLing Previous patches - November 17th, 2007

Read the stickied guide, but still have a question (never manually patched before, sorry)...

I've installed a 2nd copy of WoW (virginal 2.0 install just completed).

Can I just drag and drop the patches from our retail folder into my Den-only install?

Do I have to DL all the patches from pre-TBC (like from 1.01 or whatever the first one was) all the way up to 2.2.3 and install them?

If not, do I have to DL all the patches (like from 2.0.1 to 2.2.3) and install them in chronological order?

Or can I just DL the 2.2.3 patch?

Yeah, I know, I r teh techno-noob : (

Regards.

Edit: kids logged on to retail WoW with *my* pc and, as was to be expected, DLed the new patch when I had expressly asked them not to play on parental 'puter... I smell a suspension of their gaming privileges, hehe

well, since you install is a virgin 2.0, it only needs to update from 2.0 to 2.2.3

you can try to take the retail patches from 2.0 to 2.2.3 and copy them into the second wow folder and run them. (i think)

You can just get the patches and install them as long as you locate the patch files where WoW.exe is so it wont look up from registry. Worked for myself

First off, thanks for responding.

But, dang, I'm such a techno-noob, I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean!

I mean, I've found a bunch of sites where I can upload past patches, but those patches and their different increments vary from site to site
- some have like 2.0.0 to 2.1.0; 2.1.0 to 2.2.0 and so on and so forth,
- while other have stuff like 1.12.995 to 2.0.1, 2.0.0 to 2.0.7. 2.0.1 to 2.0.3, 2.0.2 to 2.0.4 and seem to be out of sequence

In any case, I've tried to install a few without success, messages ranging from "You need an older version of wow.ex, you have version 2.0.6608" to "Unauthorized operation"

What I really need is a "Retropatching for dummies" telling me which site to visit, which patches to download and how to install them.

I've just spent at least 30 hours reinstalling a 2nd WoW folder from scratch, over and over, trying all sorts of patch installations and sequences and I'm still unable to play.

Anyone care to share their step-by-step journey through retropatching, please?

I never had such problem because I use the .launch function to update WoW when ManGoS is ready to... And why you have 2 WoW installed? 1st for retail play and 2nd for TheDen?

Exactly. One install for retail, the second for The Den.

I've tried getting all the patches in downloader form (like WoW-2.0.0.6692-to-2.0.3.6729-enUS-downloader), dragging them one at a time and in numerical order into my clean install and double-clicking them to update.

Doesn't work. After a couple of patches, I start getting 'Unauthorized action' or 'Requires an older (or newer) version of Launcher.exe. You have version 2.0.6883'...

Or something like that, don't remember the exact wording.

Now, I'm downloading the patches themselves (still 6 missing after 24 hours on eMule).

Once I have them all up to 2.2.3, what do I do next? Just drag them into my WoW folder and start WoW from KP's Launcher?

Or how about that ManGoS thingie? Any way I can get it to update a new install without any of this hassle?

Been a week now... Dang, I wanna play. And dang, I don't wanna have my chars deleted.
