...differences are between Vista and XP? I'm getting a new notebook and have a choice between the two.

I don't know any tech lingo, so and explanation of this in laymans's terms would be appreciated.

Also, are either of these preferable for home use? I do use Microsoft office but I have access to those programs from my work PC.

Vista, aka Blista, will slow your system way down, force you to learn a whole new interface, and annoy you with messages about allowing things to happen or not. It's just like that Apple ad.
